Fred the Sea Hare

Just purchased a Sea Hare that the kids named Fred-they love him! He is doing a great job right now mowing down the algae, and I believe we have fixed the prob that caused it in the first place. Being new to the hobby, we looked it up on the internet and got scared that it would OBLITERATE the whole tank if we're not careful. Is this true? Any thoughts?

Absolutly. If you let algae get out of hand you will have to tear your tankd down and start over. Get it under control before you have to deal with something like that.

I think he is talking about the sea hare, not the algae.

Mine cleaned my tank spotless in 2 days, already in sump. Looking for a new home for him.

It is cool looking! Just want to keep him happy-saw on internet that if they get startled or if they start dying, they can release a harmful toxin. Store will take him back for 50% refund or we will find him a new algae filled home when he's done w/ ours. Kids sat by tank for almost an hour watching him eat! Maybe we could pitch a live feed to Disney Channel since he's so entertaining?

By the way Chrome, we always have a great time at the shop! Thanks again!!

I had one get sucked into a pump intake...inked pretty purple dye like crazy till I found him...amazingly he came through the whole thing no worse for wear...other than making the skimmer go crazy with purple foam I saw no ill effects to the tank...I assume we are talking about the plain old green lump variety right? There are others that are more toxic I believe...also make sure you pass him on once your tank is clean of algae...they require massive amounts of food and are nearly impossible to keep alive in a "clean" tank...you can almost always post a sea hare on here for what you paid for it and find someone who is in need of his services.
